What is the reason behind Iga Swiatek‘s consistent performances? This season, despite struggling to reach the finals, she has made deep runs in almost every tournament, except for the Italian Open, where Danielle Collins ended her run in the third round.
So far this season, she has reached two finals and won one title- both on grass, her least favorite surface. She reached the championship clash of the Bad Homburg Open- her first final on the surface.
But the Pole failed to go past World No.4 Jessica Pegula. At Wimbledon, however, Swiatek, to everyone’s surprise, advanced to the final and ended the tournament in her favor by double bageling Amanda Anisimova, becoming the second player after Steffi Graf to do so in a Grand Slam final.
Last year, the six-time Grand Slam champion played five finals, winning all, including at Roland Garros. In 2023, Swiatek reached eight finals, emerging victorious in six events, including at the French Open.
In 2022, the 24-year-old had made it to nine tournaments, losing only the Ostrava Open. Two of her victories came in Grand Slam finals- at the Roland Garros and at the US Open. Swiatek, in her pre-tournament press conference at the Canadian Open, explained how she’s able to produce consistent performances.
I think we make smart decisions about the scheduling and the loading and the practices, and that’s, I think, kept me healthy for most of the time, and also I have smart people around me to guide me a bit. And I work hard. I treat every tournament like it’s the most important one. I don’t take anything for granted at the beginning of the tournament. I guess I am just trying to be solid, and for most of the time, it’s working.
The reigning Wimbledon champion will be kick-starting her Canadian Open campaign against qualifier Guo Hanyu, who knocked out Yulia Putintseva. Swiatek has never faced the Chinese ace in her career before.
If she beats Hanyu, she will face the winner of the second-round match between Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Eva Lys. She is projected to meet reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the quarterfinals.
Iga Swiatek shares why she likes playing in Montreal
Iga Swiatek is making her fourth appearance at the Canadian Open. She made her debut in 2019 and reached the third round. Then in 2022, Swiatek once again failed to go beyond the third round.

The following season, Swiatek couldn’t overcome eventual champion Jessica Pegula in the semifinals and had skipped the tournament last year. In the pre-tournament press conference of this year’s Canadian Open, the second seed joked that the reason why she likes playing in Montreal is because of the IGA Stadium – the venue where the WTA Canadian Open is underway.
Well, the name of the stadium is just perfect, you know (laughs). No, but last time I was here, I really played a solid tournament, and it wasn’t always easy for me to play good on faster hardcourts. But I remember I also had a pretty solid training block, and I played good.
Swiatek has never tasted success in the two WTA 1000 tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati. In the latter tournament, she produced her best when she made it to the last four in 2023 and 2024. Last year, eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka ended her run.
The Canadian Open is one of the four WTA 1000 tournaments that she hasn’t yet won. Apart from the Montreal and Cincinnati WTA 1000 ones, Swiatek has yet to taste success at the Dubai Open and the Wuhan Open. She is yet to play the Wuhan Open.
