World No. 1 Iga Swiatek began the bid for her first Wimbledon title with a convincing straight-set win over Sofia Kenin in the first round. The Polish superstar won with a 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.
Swiatek has never achieved success at SW19, reaching as far as the quarter-finals last year. She lost to Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals 12 months ago. However, this time, she is ready to overcome all obstacles to win her first title at the All-England Club.
It was a solid start and not an easy draw. I’m happy I have another chance to play another match here. Nowadays in WTA it’s pretty easy to play against a Grand Slam champion even in first rounds. You have to be ready for everything. These are experienced players. there’s no time to get into the tournament slowly. You need to be ready straight away. I’m happy I did that today.Iga Swiatek in her post-match interview
Since the beginning of this century, Swiatek has won all 18 of her first-round matches at major tournaments and has amassed 72 victories in Grand Slam singles, the highest among all female players. Additionally, she has triumphed in five consecutive matches against former major champions.
Kenin hoped to recreate a memorable moment from last year when she surprised everyone by defeating the 7th-ranked Coco Gauff in a thrilling three-set match in the first round. But alas, World No. 1 proves to be in the league of her own.
Iga Swiatek begins hunt for her first Wimbledon title
Iga Swiatek‘s first-round Wimbledon victory marks a milestone for the World No. 1. She has now won 20 matches in a row.
Swiatek ended the clay season with 19 consecutive wins. These included her ninth and tenth WTA 1000 titles in Madrid and Rome and her fifth Grand Slam title at the French Open. The Polish superstar’s latest win extends her streak to 20 on Wimbledon’s grass courts.
This is her second streak of 20 or more consecutive wins. Her first was a 37-match streak in 2022, winning titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome, and the French Open. That streak ended in the third round of Wimbledon against Alize Cornet.
Swiatek is the ninth woman in the Open Era with multiple 20-match win streaks before turning 24. The first eight are legends: Evonne Goolagong, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, and Justine Henin.
