Iga Swiatek has opened up about the controversial point during her match against Emma Navarro in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open on Wednesday (January 22). Swiatek admitted, that as she was focused on the match, she didn’t see the replay.

After racing to the second set by restricting Navarro to just one game in the first, Swiatek was 2-2 in the second set. It was then Swiatek hit the ball that had clearly bounced twice before she returned it.

Swiatek, who had no idea about the double bounce when she played it, claimed that she didn’t see the replay and so didn’t refuse the point. She was also waiting for the umpire’s decision, but as nothing happened, she chose not to pay much heed to it and continued to focus on the next point.

I didn’t see the replay after the point. I didn’t look up to the screens, as I want to stay focused. I wasn’t sure if it was a double bounce or hit it with my frame. I didn’t look at the contact point. Sometimes you don’t really look at it when you hit the ball. Hence, I wasn’t sure. I thought the umpires can drop the call.

Navarro was the semifinalist in last year’s US Open (her first in Majors) and was looking to secure a place in the last four in Melbourne for the first time. Swiatek, with her 6-1, 6-2 win, has now improved her head-to-head record over the 8th seed to 2-1.

The Pole, who will be playing her second semifinal at Melbourne Park, has met the American five times. Swiatek has won four of those matches except for the fourth-round clash at the 2022 Cincinnati Open, their last hard-court meeting.

Madison is a great player and really experienced, so you never know. The match that I lost, she kind of killed me, so I think it can be tricky.

Iga Swiatek said during her on-court interview

They last met in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Italian Open, which the 23-year-old had won in straight sets. If the five-time Grand Slam champion advances to her first Australian Open final, then she could lock horns with Aryna Sabalenka who is aiming to win three Majors on the trot Down Under.
