Iga Swiatek has on several occasions referred to tennis legend Rafael Nadal as her childhood idol, which has had an impact on her career. However, the Spaniard will be retiring from professional tennis at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.

Several big names in tennis, like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray, are expected to attend the Davis Cup Finals and will be part of Nadal’s farewell ceremony. Swiatek, who is in Malaga to represent Poland at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, has cast doubt on her attendance.

I would love to see it, but I have to start the pre-season after competing here. Rafa has had a huge impact on me, on how I see tennis and my career as well. But I am going to miss him on the court. Iknow it’s a good decision for him, he’s played so well for so many years that he deserves to enjoy the second half of his life as well.

Iga Swiatek sends clear warning to Aryna Sabalenka ahead of 2025 season

Iga Swiatek began the 2024 season on a high after winning five titles in six months. However, since August, her game form has dropped coupled with some coaching issues that she dealt with.

All this led to the 23-year-old conceding her No. 1 position to Aryna Sabalenka. She ended the year as World No. 2 despite spending most of the year at the top of the WTA rankings.

In the aforementioned interview, she was asked if she was worried about how the year ended. Swiatek revealed that she’s focused on bouncing back and getting her No. 1 position back from Sabalenka.

I wouldn’t say it’s a big problem for me. Everyone wants to be up there, of course, but I don’t get hung up on it. Aryna (Sabalenka) and I are going to fight for it. And I know that if I work well, focusing on the right things, I’m sure that the results will come from that and I can get back to number one again.
