Iga Swiatek came to Poland’s rescue when she went past Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-4 at the United Cup on Wednesday in Sydney. After the match, she was asked about her New Year’s resolution.
The United Cup is her first official tournament since serving her one-month ban. Swiatek dealt with criticism due to her failed drug test. A banned drug called trimetazidine was found in her sample and Swiatek was banned for a month, which included her three-week provisional suspension due to which she missed three tournaments on the Asian swing.
The doping case affected her tennis as she was not enjoying her matches. In 2025 however, Swiatek wants to move on and forget about all that happened in the last couple of months so that she can play her best tennis and enjoy it, and that’s her New Year’s resolution.
Nothing specific honestly. I feel like I can have more distance after what happened to me the last couple of months. I’m gonna try to just enjoy tennis as I did today. It’s not always easy to do that. But I feel a lot of positive energy here in Sydney. Thank you for cheering for us.

With this win, Swiatek is 3-0 in her last three meetings against Muchova, while overall she is 4-1. The win was also the 23-year-old’s 10th career win at the United Cup.
Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz help Poland reach quarterfinals
Right after her singles, Iga Swiatek was back on the court again for mixed doubles she played with Hubert Hurkacz. The pair secured a hard-fought win over Karolina Muchova and Tomas Machac with scores of 7-6(3), 6-3 to help Poland advance to another quarterfinals.

Honestly I was sure they were going to play amazing tennis because they have always great teams in doubles and mixed doubles. They are kind of raised that way. But I knew that we have the game to win it. For sure we were leading from the beginning. In the first set it got tight at the end, but I kind of felt that we were leading anyway so in the tie-break we just used that.

Last year’s finalist lost the first match of the tie after Hurkacz failed to overcome Machac who with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win, gave the Czech Republic a 1-0 lead. Czech Republic still has a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals if they finish as the best second-placed team in Sydney.
