During a changeover, Iga Swiatek was seen ripping her On skirt while playing her first-round match against China’s Yue Yuan at the Australian Open on Monday (January 19). The Pole, in 2023, became the first female tennis player to sign the sponsorship deal with the Swiss sportswear brand co-owned by 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer.

Swiatek was finding it a bit difficult to move better earlier in the match in that tight skirt. In an attempt to make things more comfortable, Swiatek, during a break in the first set, sat on her chair and ripped her skirt.

Here’s the video:

Swiatek overcame the early scare to secure a comprehensive win in the second set to book a berth in the second round with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win. It was her second clash with the qualifier following their second-round meeting in last year’s China Open, which Swiatek won. Swiatek will next be facing Marie Bouzkova, who went past Renata Zarazua in the previous round. She holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead over the Czech ace.

Swiatek lifted her sixth Grand Slam title with a double-bagel win over Amanda Anisimova in last year’s Wimbledon final. Having won four Roland Garros as well as the 2022 US Open, the 24-year-old will complete the Career Grand Slam if she clinches the Melbourne Slam. Six women have accomplished the feat in the Open Era, last achieved by Maria Sharapova in 2012.

Prior to arriving in Melbourne, Iga Swiatek finally got her hands on the United Cup with her Polish teammates. Poland, who finished as runners-up in 2023 and 2024, defeated Switzerland 2-1. Swiatek lost her two singles matches in the semifinals and final against Coco Gauff and Belinda Bencic, respectively.

After the final, Swiatek admitted that she was dealing with physical discomfort. She said something similar while giving an assessment of her performance against Yue Yuan.

For sure, I was a bit rusty at the beginning, didn’t really start well. She used the opportunity, but I knew if I put the hard work in, I will play better, so that’s what I tried to do from the middle of the first set, and yeah, I’m happy that it worked. For sure, many ups and downs, but overall, I have some stuff to work on, so I’ll just focus on that.

Iga Swiatek said during the on-court interview

The six-time Grand Slam champion is a two-time semifinalist in the first Major of the season, reaching the stage in 2022 and 2025. Last year, eventual champion Madison Keys knocked her out after a three-set battle.

It was mostly footwork because I started a bit, you know, tight, so I needed to get my legs moving and go after my shots. Overall, be more brave with my decisions. For sure, she started playing full, and yeah, I just needed to react a bit quicker and not be pushed back, but really go for it. So I just tried to do this a couple of times, you know, it wasn’t perfect, but that’s, you know, why I’m happy because it’s not hard to win matches when everything is going well, so today it wasn’t, but I managed to win, so it was good.

Last year, the former World No.1 reached her first final of the season at the Bad Homburg Open and ended her trophy drought at Wimbledon. She then added the Korea Open and the Cincinnati Open to her trophy cabinet. At the WTA Finals, the World No.2 failed to make the semifinals for the second consecutive time.
