Iga Swiatek announced on Tuesday (22 October) that she will be representing her country in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) Finals in Malaga. The World No. 2, who will return to action at the WTA Finals in Riyadh to defend her crown, said that she has decided to play in the World Cup of tennis.

Swiatek has not played any tournament since her quarterfinal exit at the US Open. She missed the entire Asian swing, which caused her to lose a lot of ranking points, and conceded the No. 1 position to Aryna Sabalenka.

The Polish ace has also undergone coaching changes as she parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski and hired Wim Fissette in his place. The WTA Finals will be the duo’s first assignment. She will then travel to Malaga for the BJKC Finals.

Iga Swiatek looks to improve hard court game with new coach Wim Fissette

Despite winning four of the five Grand Slam titles under his guidance, Iga Swiatek parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski and the most probable reason might be her struggles on hard court. Apart from one US Open title, the Pole has struggled to make it big in the hard court Majors.

Her new coach, Wim Fissette, aims to change the dynamics. While he wants Swiatek to retain her queen dominance on clay courts, the Belgian wants the former World No. 1 to excel on hard courts and grass as well.

The main goal will be this, as everyone wants to see Iga reigning on the clay, the fans place her as the queen of this surface. Obviously, having success in the other Grand Slams is also a fundamental objective, perhaps achieving a higher level of comfort on faster surfaces.

Wim Fissette said (via Eurosport)

Before joining Swiatek’s team, Fissette was working with Naomi Osaka, who won two hard court Grand Slam titles under his guidance. The Swiatek-Fissette duo will be hoping to replicate this going forward.
