In Short
  • Iga Swiatek has lost five consecutive matches against top 10 opponents, marking a career first.
  • During her latest match at Indian Wells, Swiatek displayed frustration by smashing her towel and yelling at her team.
  • Following her defeat, Swiatek dropped to No. 3 in the live rankings, while Elina Svitolina advanced to the semifinals.

Iga Swiatek, for the first time in her career, has lost five consecutive matches against top 10 opponents. The streak started in last year’s WTA Finals, where the Pole suffered defeats in her round-robin matches at the hands of Amanda Anisimova and eventual champion Elena Rybakina.

This year at the United Cup, Swiatek lost to Coco Gauff in the semifinals. At the Australian Open, Rybakina knocked her out, and now in the ongoing Indian Wells, Elina Svitolina ended her run. This is also the third consecutive time she has lost in the quarterfinals in the same number of singles tournaments she has played so far.

During her latest match, Svitolina broke her in the ninth game of the third set, and this saw Swiatek lose her cool completely. She smashed her towel during the break, and after sitting on the chair, she lashed out at her team.

Because of her defeat, the former World No.1 has dropped to the No.3 spot on the live rankings table. Rybakina, who is chasing her second title in the California desert, will reach her career-best No.2 ranking on Monday. The Kazakh ace defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the 2023 Indian Wells final.

Elina Svitolina reveals the changes to her game after defeating Iga Swiatek

Elina Svitolina, thanks to her Australian Open run, got back into the top 10. After clinching the ASB Classic by defeating Wang Xinyu, Svitolina lost in the semifinal in Melbourne to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka.

Following her Qatar Open exit, she couldn’t cross the final hurdle at the Dubai Tennis Championships, losing to Jessica Pegula. The 31-year-old, who is now two matches away from winning her fifth WTA 1000 of her career, has improved her head-to-head record over Iga Swiatek to 2-4. At the press conference afterward, she talked about the changes to her game that have helped her produce a strong start to the season.

Certainly, I worked on my game and some tactical aspects. We also analyzed statistics to see what worked on the court and what didn’t. It was important for me to see it with my own eyes because sometimes the feeling and reality can be different.

Svitolina will next be locking horns with Elena Rybakina, who downed Pegula. The reigning Australian Open champion holds a 3-3 head-to-head tie over the World No.9.

That’s why I have my team providing me with all that information. Then I had time to work on some things: serve, return, and overall, a bit of everything. We are at such a high level that those small differences or adjustments make the difference between being consistent or simply having good weeks occasionally.

Elina Svitolina added

Svitolina exited last year’s Indian Wells after reaching the quarterfinals. Prior to the Svitolina versus Rybakina match, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka will be playing Linda Noskova in the first semifinal.

While Svitolina will be playing the semifinals of Indian Wells for the second time in her career, Swiatek, who defeated Maria Sakkari in the finals in 2022 and 2024, has yet to win a Big Title since defeating Jasmine Paolini in last year’s Cincinnati Open final. She lost to Mirra Andreeva in last year’s Indian Wells semifinal.

Last year as well, the six-time Grand Slam champion was struggling at the start of the year, but as the season progressed, she started to regain her form and ended her title drought at Wimbledon, winning her career’s first grass-court title by double-bageling Amanda Anisimova. Swiatek has yet to win a tour-level singles title since the 2025 Korea Open.
