Iga Swiatek is seeking to win the Indian Wells for the second consecutive year. The Polish star strengthened her position to defend the title when she eased through former World No.4 Caroline Garcia to reach the third round. She then revealed that she intends to remain solid in pursuit of the Indian Wells title.

The five-time Grand Slam champion began the season reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open. She then failed to win any title in the Middle East swing, crashing out in the semifinals of the Qatar Open and quarterfinals of the Dubai Championships. However, Swiatek holds a mind blowing record in Indian Wells.

The World No.2 had won 17 of her last 18 matches at the tournament. In fact, her only defeat was in 2023 against Angelique Kerber in the Round of 16. On Friday (March 7), she put out an excellent display against Garcia winning 6-2, 6-0. The 23-year-old dropping just two match points sends a big statement to her rivals Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina.

During her press conference, Swiatek was asked what was the difference between winning a straight sets match and her often tighter losses. The World No.2 revealed that the score doesn’t matter to her as she always tries to give her best on the court.

It’s just, you know, that I’m solid no matter what the score is, and I don’t take [the] next games for granted. If I’m leading even 4-0, I know that I should keep playing the same way and keep the same attitude to just win the match. But for sure, the matches that I lose are usually much tighter, which means that it’s harder to win against me, I guess. But it doesn’t matter. I’m going to have matches that are huge battles and easy matches, but you can never expect and you can never just, I don’t know, try to predict. It doesn’t make sense.

Swiatek is yet to win a title this season. Despite playing well in all the events she has featured in, she has often missed out on the title because of a lack of push in the latter stages. She will hope that the same situation doesn’t repeat itself in Indian Wells.

Iga Swiatek says she wouldn’t overthink her favorite status ahead of her third round match

Iga Swiatek remains the favorite to win the Indian Wells despite not being the top seed. The Polish star will hope to bring the momentum from her opening match win into her third-round match against Ukraine star Dayana Yastremska. The World No.46 thrashed Ons Jabeur in the second round to earn a place against Swiatek.

During the aforementioned press conference, Swiatek said that she would try not to overthink her mantle as the favorite to win the match. She added that the Ukraine star can play amazingly sometimes.

Honestly, I feel like players playing against me, they can play amazing or they can play a bit worse. So you never know what you’re going to get from the other side. They can play kind of without expectations playing me – so I will try not to overthink that. My mentality and my mindset is always kind of the same before the match, and I’ll prepare tactically, for sure.
