Iga Swiatek struggled a great deal earlier this year. Although she was making deep runs, she was not performing well by her usual standards.

Even at Roland Garros, Swiatek struggled, so much so that in the semifinal, eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka handed her a bagel in the third set. She failed to defend three titles on the European clay swing, including the French Open, where she was playing as the two-time defending champion.

But everything changed when the grass-swing started. The Pole, to everyone’s surprise, ended up reaching the final of the Bad Homburg Open- her first final on grass. But she had to wait for a couple of weeks to end her title drought.

In the Bad Homburg Open final, Swiatek suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Jessica Pegula. Then at Wimbledon, Swiatek registered a double-bagel victory over Amanda Anisimova in the final to win her sixth Grand Slam title.

She made two more finals. First, she took home her career’s first Cincinnati Open title by going past Jasmine Paolini. During the Asian swing, she fulfilled a family dream when she beat Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final of the Korea Open. After two more defeats (at the China Open and the Wuhan Open), Swiatek, for the second consecutive time, failed to reach the semifinals of the WTA Finals.

Because Swiatek failed to defend five titles this year, she even dropped to the eighth position on the rankings table. But thanks to her successful runs in the aforementioned events, she finished the season in the second spot.

I think finishing as No. 2 is a great achievement. I think the level we’re all at got more equal. I think you could see that, especially during the WTA finals, basically, any of us could win this tournament; we really played a lot of tight matches.

Iga Swiatek said in an interview with CLAY

Swiatek also discussed how tennis keeps evolving. She said a 186 kilometers per hour serve speed would have been a game changer three years ago, but now, her opponents are serving much better, at 195 kilometers per hour.

It’s obviously not only about the speed. It is just an example, but I think tennis is evolving and we’re all presenting a pretty good level now. There are some players that obviously prefer some conditions or others who feel better in this or that part of the season…but I think overall we all are getting better in a really fast way. The season was challenging but, but I’m super proud of it.

Iga Swiatek added

The 24-year-old had a 62-17 win-loss record this year. She was dethroned from the top of the rankings table by Sabalenka last year, toward the end of the season.

Iga Swiatek on whether she wants to achieve the Career Grand Slam

Iga Swiatek now needs just the Australian Open to complete the Career Grand Slam. Back in 2022, she lifted the US Open and then went on to add four Roland Garros titles to her name, and won at Wimbledon this year.

In the Open Era, seven women have completed the Career Grand Slam. During that aforementioned interview with CLAY, Swiatek was asked whether completing the Career Grand Slam is one of her goals.

I don’t set goals like that. Obviously, it’s something that I dream of and something that I want to happen one day, but I’m not going to come to Melbourne and think about it every day.

This year at the Australian Open, her run ended in the semifinals with a three-set defeat to eventual champion Madison Keys. The main draw of the Australian Open kicks off on January 18. Swiatek has so far made two Australian Open semifinals (in 2022 and 2025).
