Iga Swiatek got past Danielle Collins in an exciting clash at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It was the all-important quarterfinal match at the Summer Games and the American gave the WTA World No. 1 a stern test. Both players were placed in the top half of the draw and their matchup was expected by many.
Nothing other than a straight-set victory was expected from Swiatek, who won this year’s French Open and has a strong record on clay. However, Collins did not go down without a fight. With this being her last year on tour, she fought until the end and did not give Swiatek any easy points.
The first set was straight-forward for Swiatek, who won consecutive break points and zoomed away with a 6-1 lead. However, the second set had a lot of tight points and Collins started to fight back. She won three continuous games and put the Pole under pressure.
With those three games, Collins won the set and forced a decider. Unfortunately, she struggled during the match and took a medical timeout in the third set. She later retired from the match with the score reading 6-1, 2-6, 4-1 in Swiatek’s favor.
