‘Queen of clay’ Iga Swiatek continues to prove why she is so deadly on the soil surface as she gets past her quarterfinals of the French Open in style. After cruising past most of her previous matches, the Pole was up against Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinals.
It seemed like a competitive match-up between two Grand Slam winners. However, the match was unlike all expectations and Swiatek did not stop to put her foot on the pedal and easily drove past Vondrousova in straight sets. Swiatek won the game 6-0, 6-2 to record yet another quick win and a position in the semi-finals against Coco Gauff.
Post her win against Vondrousova, the World No. 1 was asked about her upcoming matchup. Swiatek acknowledged the Gauff challenge.
Honestly the same as before any match. You don’t wanna change your routines. It’s good to keep going and not think of this match as something huge. Against Coco it isn’t easy. She really likes clay, especially here. I’ll just focus on myself and I’ll prepare tactically and we’ll see.Iga Swiatek said via Roland Garros Press
There is no surprise with the matchups given that the rankings force only this scenario to happen. Now, the Pole will meet her match as Gauff is also in great touch and has cruised past her opponents. Two talented women will square off against each other, and for the first time, Swiatek might not have a dominant victory over Gauff.
Iga Swiatek is on a dominant run at the 2024 French Open
Iga Swiatek took down Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets as she made her way to the semi-finals of the French Open. After the second-round scare against Naomi Osaka, Swiatek has been more dominant than ever, slowly increasing her win streak.
Currently, she has the second-highest win percentage of 94.3% at the French Open right after Helen Wills, who has a record of 95.23% at the tournament. Swiatek has 33 wins at the French Open with only 2 losses and is making her way to increasing the number of wins.
Now, the Pole is one match away from another Finals appearance in this tournament. With three titles already, she is slowly making her way to the history books as she will soon become the first woman since Justine Henin to win three consecutive titles at the French Open.
