- She received two key tips from Nadal, one of which focused on enhancing her forehand technique.
- Swiatek aims to regain her form ahead of the French Open after a disappointing hard-court season.
Iga Swiatek has completely overhauled her clay-court preparation by teaming up with her ultimate tennis idol, Rafael Nadal, for an exclusive, intensive training block in Mallorca.
This dramatic shift in strategy comes after a brutally disappointing hard-court swing that saw the four-time French Open champion slip from world number three down to number four, prompting her to completely reset her inner circle. Desperate to rediscover her dominant, world-beating form before the unforgiving European clay season begins, Swiatek didn’t just change her scenery; she directly tapped the King of Clay himself to help right the ship.
Speaking to the Polish press, Swiatek opened up about the transformative experience, detailing the two tips from her idol that she would take with her for the rest of the season. Swiatek said in the Polish media:
Tennis-wise, there were two tips that I really liked. I’m not sure if everyone would find the details interesting… but overall, just being on court with Rafa gave me a lot of perspective and a boost in my mindset. Hearing him talk about the struggles he’s had, or what he had to work on because it wasn’t working perfectly-things you don’t see at all when watching on TV-was very inspiring. It shows that even the best just have to train hard and do the right things for it to work out. It doesn’t just happen on its own. And technically, he told me one thing about my forehand that helped me, because in a way… oh man, I’d have to tell the whole five-minute history of my forehand for it to make sense!
The turning point for the Polish superstar arrived on the heels of a frustrating early-season slump. Swiatek entered 2026 with sky-high expectations, but the hard courts offered little but heartbreak. Following a quarter-final exit at the Australian Open, she endured a string of uncharacteristic defeats in Doha and Indian Wells.

The final straw came at the Miami Open, where she suffered a shocking second-round loss to Magda Linette. That defeat not only dented her ranking but directly catalyzed a massive personnel change, leading Swiatek to part ways with coach Wim Fissette. Seeking a fresh perspective, she packed her bags for the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain.
The Tour reacts to the hyped collaboration
Unsurprisingly, footage of the practice sessions quickly went viral on Instagram, sending a ripple of reactions through the tennis community. Polish tennis journalist Tytus Olszewski, who observed the sessions firsthand, noted the immediate chemistry between Swiatek and her new coach. He reported that they communicated excellently in English, with Roig providing instantaneous, high-level feedback on the spot.

Meanwhile, Swiatek’s peers on the tour watched the developments with a mix of admiration and dread. World No.5 Jessica Pegula offered a blunt assessment of the new alliance, telling reporters that the collaboration is ‘perfect’ for the Polish star. American powerhouse Madison Keys took a more humorous approach to the situation, joking that Nadal’s active support for the best clay-court player on the WTA tour should, frankly, be “illegal.”
Even veteran coaches couldn’t hide their excitement. Brad Gilbert, a renowned tennis analyst and former coach to Coco Gauff, took to social media to express his awe, calling the partnership “priceless for Iga Pop” and adding how incredibly cool it was to see “Vamos Rafa” back on the practice court, this time in a mentorship capacity.
What comes next for Iga Swiatek?
The immediate testing ground for this new brain trust is the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, an indoor clay event where Iga Swiatek has historically been absolutely untouchable. She boasts a flawless 10-0 lifetime record at the venue, capturing back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Seeded third in this year’s draw, she will open her campaign against the tricky German veteran Laura Siegemund.

Despite the legendary coaching injection, Swiatek is actively managing her own expectations as she looks to improve upon a 12-6 season record. That marathon ultimately points toward Paris.
With the French Open slated to begin on May 24, the tennis world will be watching closely to see if the Mallorcan magic can help Swiatek reclaim the Roland Garros crown she shockingly lost in 2025. If her practice sessions are any indication, the rest of the tour is officially on notice.
