World No.1 Iga Swiatek secured her spot in the third round of Wimbledon by defeating Petra Martic. The top seed won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Martic took a medical timeout during the first set. Her movement seemed limited after that.
Swiatek already has an impressive tennis CV. She has won 10 consecutive Grand Slam matches and 21 matches in a row overall. Despite high expectations, the Pole stays focused and confident.
I know that I’m playing on a different surface, I have different challenges here and I’m focussing on them and not the statistics. I want to get better here on grass so that’s my main goal and I don’t feel like I need to prove anything because it’s a totally different story.Iga Swiatek in her post-match interview
Martic showed signs of injury but fought hard against Swiatek. The top seed’s skill was evident, leading to her straight-sets win. Next, Swiatek will face Yulia Putintseva as she aims for her first Wimbledon title.
I’m starting with a blank space and going with it. I have really low expectations. I’m just focussing on the work, and I guess the results will come after.Iga Swiatek added
Swiatek hit 16 winners, which helped her win the match. In the second set, she took an early lead. Martic tried to keep up but was broken at 4-3. Swiatek then served to win the match and closed it out with a love service game. With her recent performances at Wimbledon recently, it seems like the decision to skip the Berlin Open is boding well for her first title in SW19.
Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula dominate the headlines in the Wimbledon women’s draw on Thursday
Top seed Iga Swiatek reached the third round of Wimbledon with a hard-fought win over Petra Martic. The Polish star won 6-4 6-3, despite her opponent challenging her at times. Martic needed a medical timeout for a back injury in the first set. Swiatek’s victory extended her winning streak to 21 matches.
The five-time Grand Slam champion has struggled on grass before and has never gone past the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. She will next face Yulia Putintseva, who defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Putintseva’s win was an upset over the 27th seed from the Czech Republic.
American fifth seed Jessica Pegula was the highest-ranked player to be eliminated. She lost to world number 42 Wang Xinyu. The Chinese star won 6-4, 6-7, (7-9), 6-1 and will play against Britain’s Harriet Dart in the next round.
Other seeds had strong performances on a windy day in London. Ons Jabeur, last year’s runner-up, defeated Robin Montgomery 6-1, 7-5. Danielle Collins beat Dalma Galfi 6-3, 6-4 and will face Beatriz Haddad Maia. Madison Keys and Jelena Ostapenko also recorded straight-set wins.
