Iga Swiatek fell to Amanda Anisimova in a decisive round robin match at the WTA Finals in Riyadh on Wednesday (November 5). Despite grabbing the lead after winning the first set, Swiatek failed to continue with her performance, leading her opponent to secure a comeback victory. In addition, during the match, the Polish star wanted a heckler to be forced out of the stadium.

Swiatek entered the last match of the round robin stage with just one win. She had defeated Madison Keys in straight sets but failed to claim a consecutive victory against Elena Rybakina in her second match. Ahead of the clash against Anisimova, it was difficult to establish a favorite, considering a 1-1 head-to-head record for both players.

However, the fact that Swiatek won the WTA Finals in 2023 and is playing in her fifth consecutive season-ending tournament, gave her an edge over Anisimova. The match began as expected with both players seeking to dominate the game, firing winners and ensuring they were not broken in the first set.

But it was Swiatek who claimed the lead as her clean strike and aggression helped overcome Anisimova in the tiebreak. While going for a break after winning the first set, Swiatek was bothered by a heckler who kept shouting between her first and second serve. In fact, she was heard telling him to be quiet on one occasion.

Swiatek reported the heckler to the umpire, asking that he be removed from the stadium. The 24-year-old believed that the spectator was drunk as he kept disrupting her flow on the court.

He’s clearly drunk. Can you kick him out? He’s disturbing the game. He’s disturbing the game, he’s shouting between first and second serve.

Unfortunately, Swiatek was left disappointed with the umpire, who told him he wouldn’t send the heckler out of the stadium; instead, he would try to make him quieter before trying to kick him out. Despite being frustrated at that, Swiatek made sure not to drag the matter on and went to take the first set break.

In the second set, Swiatek tried to sustain her opening set level, playing with the same tempo, but Anisimova had upped her game, hitting the ball harder than ever. It was in the tenth game that Anisimova finally broke Swiatek in the match and went on to clinch a decisive 6(3)-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory after two hours and 35 minutes.

Iga Swiatek admits she didn’t play perfectly against Amanda Anisimova in the WTA Finals

Iga Swiatek enjoyed her first meeting against Amanda Anisimova on tour after beating her 6-0, 6-0 at the Wimbledon final. But, since then, the former World No.1 has not found a way to beat the World No.4. Anisimova defeated Swiatek in straight sets at the US Open before Wednesday’s win at the WTA Finals.

Anisimova now leads Swiatek 2-1 in their head-to-head record on tour. During her post-match interview with Reem Abulleil for AFP, Swiatek revealed that she did everything on the court but didn’t get the result. The World No.2 felt that she didn’t play her perfect tennis, which ultimately led to her loss.

Honestly. I did everything I could today, so like no regrets. I felt like I was really in the zone, had a positive mindset. Okay, maybe some balls went short or something, but tennis is not going to be perfect. So, I fought and I really didn’t give up. It wasn’t enough, which makes me sad. I will need to find some understanding because when you do everything and it’s still not enough, it means that you need to get your tennis better.

Anisimova and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina have secured their qualification for the semi-final of the WTA Finals from Serena Williams’ Group. Swiatek’s season has now come to an end, winning just three titles in 2025, including the Wimbledon Championship in July.
