Iga Swiatek, after a few days of vacation, has arrived in Toronto to kick off her campaign on the North American hardcourt swing. Swiatek, a one-time semifinalist at the Canadian Open, lost in the fourth round last year.

She was last seen in action at Wimbledon, where her title defense ended at the hands of Alexandra Eala, and this made the 21-year-old the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament. Swiatek recently appeared on Natalia Szymanczyk‘s podcast, during which, among other things, she talked about fan interactions. When asked about the weirdest place she was asked to sign, the former World No.1 said:

The chest. But that’s not all that weird. I think the forehead would be the weirdest. It was a guy’s chest. Guys are more like: ‘Iga, sign my chest.’

Swiatek then opened up about fame’s downside. Fame has changed her daily life, particularly in Poland, because it has now become tough for her to be in public places.

Today in Warsaw, I was testing it out. I was shopping at Elektrownia Powisle, and it was tough. In 30 minutes, eight people approached me. I always have to be ready for a photo. It throws off the rhythm of my own life. When I was eating focaccia, I was afraid I’d get dirty because someone would want a photo right away. But it’s always super nice interactions, because people wouldn’t dare say something mean to my face.

Swiatek mentioned the “mean” comments because she has often invited a great deal of criticism, especially after her doping scandal. Also, she is not performing well by her own standards, having reached just one tour-level semifinal this year (at the Italian Open).

Swiatek last won a title at the 2025 Korea Open. Last year, she reached her first final of the season in Bad Homburg and ended her title drought at Wimbledon with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amanda Anisimova in the final.

Dominika Cibulkova says she is convinced Iga Swiatek will become No.1 player

Because she failed to defend her title at the All England Club, Iga Swiatek has dropped to the No.8 ranking. Twice this season she has suffered opening-round exits, in Miami and Bad Homburg.

Swiatek lost her No.1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka toward the end of the 2024 season. She got close to dethroning the Belarusian ace after getting back to the No.2 position, but Sabalenka eventually extended her lead. But Dominika Cibulkova has full faith in the six-time Grand Slam champion’s ability to reclaim the top spot. She told Tennis365:

I firmly believe she can return to number one. I am quite convinced.

Swiatek reached the top of the rankings table for the first time in April, 2022. After this year’s Canadian Open, Swiatek will have a huge task of defending her title in Cincinnati, where she lifted her career’s 11th WTA 1000 title by beating Jasmine Paolini.

At the US Open last year, Swiatek’s run ended at the hands of eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals. Except for the Australian Open, Swiatek has won every Major at least once.

It was in New York back in 2022 that the 25-year-old clinched her career’s third Grand Slam title following her wins at the 2020 and 2022 French Open. Swiatek has not yet played a final on the clay swing since winning the 2024 French Open.

Sabalenka will enter the New York Slam as the defending champion. She will be hoping to end her Grand Slam title drought as she failed to taste success in the first three Majors of the season.
