Currently, with his perfect record and impressive performance in the UFC, Topuria appears eager to elevate his status within the community. As a result, the UFC featherweight champion is seeking a matchup against the UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. This potential matchup has sparked vivid and intriguing discussions in the UFC community.

Alexander Volkanovski does not want to ‘get in the way’ of Ilia Topuria’s double champion aspirations

After a dominant victory over Alexander Volkanovski, UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria successfully defended his title once. In his most recent fight at UFC 308, the Spaniard delivered a brutal defeat to former champion Max Holloway. Following this match, an intriguing question arose about who could potentially defeat Topuria in the 145 lbs division.

Topuria believes that none of his fellow fighters in the division can defeat him. Consequently, while looking for a competitive matchup, the Spaniard sees the UFC champion at 155 lbs as an ideal opponent. Interestingly, during a recent interview, Volkanovski was asked for his thoughts on Topuria dismissing his featherweight rivals.

I don’t want to get in the way of someone’s (title dream). I obviously want that (Topuria) fight. It’s gonna suck, because I’d love that. If the UFC want (Makhachev vs. Topuria), and (Topuria) is pushing for it and they can make that happen, then alright. Good on them. But if they can’t make it happen, let’s not waste time and let’s lock our fight in. That’s sort of how it is. But if they can make it happen, sweet.

Currently, according to some sources, Volkanovski and Topuria are scheduled to face each other at UFC 314 in Miami. However, neither the Australian fighter nor the UFC featherweight champion has confirmed this matchup. With the anticipation surrounding Topuria’s next fight, it will be intriguing to see who the UFC executives ultimately choose for his opponents.
