The biggest name in the current UFC roster when it comes to unmatched consistency and knockout abilities is Ilia Topuria. Following his featherweight title vacation, the Georgian-Spanish fighter has moved up and is now scheduled to fight former champion Charles Oliveira. Ahead of the lightweight title fight, former BMF champion Jorge Masvidal, has shared his two cents on the same.
Masvidal is no stranger to superstar status and flashy finishes as he holds the record for the fastest knockout in UFC history. Throughout his career, the veteran had trained with incredible talents and Topuria is one of them. In a recent interview with RedCorner MMA, the ‘Gamebred’ revealed why he thinks Topuria would beat Oliveira with ease.
Ilia is one out of 10,000. Say their name. I’ve trained with everybody, brother. This guy’s special. I think he’s gonna be a world champion at 155. He’s gonna beat Charles, man. He’s gonna find a way to beat him. Charles is bigger. Charles has kicks, knees, elbows, great jiu-jitsu, good wrestling. Everywhere, Charles is good but Ilia is just different, brother.
Topuria’s featherweight reign was incredible as he knocked out legends like Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway in the same year. According to reports, Topuria had problems in weight cutting which forced him to move up, in search of new challenges. This isn’t the first time for Topuria in the lightweight division and the fighter is confident about his increased power.

The Georgian-Spanish fighter has already warned Oliveira that he will knock him out and secure his second championship belt. According to the fighter, Oliveira has 10 losses in UFC, which makes him a quitter when things get tough inside the octagon. The same narrative was used by Khabib Nurmagomedov before pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev submitted the Brazilian at UFC 280.
On the other hand, ‘Do Bronx’ is confident about making a strong comeback with significant personal motivation driving his determination forward. Oliveira believes his BJJ is superior to Topuria and he does have a good momentum after his last dominant victory. However, many experts and fans strongly believe Oliveira cannot withstand Topuria’s explosive power and relentless finishing ability.
Ilia Topuria doesn’t think welterweight is tough
A few months ago, Ilia Topuria boldly declared his ambition to become the first-ever three-division champion in UFC history. Before turning thirty years old, Topuria shared his plans about moving up and first capturing the UFC lightweight championship, which is very close. After securing the lightweight title, the powerful knockout specialist has planned to bulk up and conquer the UFC welterweight division.

Now with his number one rival Islam Makhachev moving up, it has now made it easier for Topuria to consider the move. The current 170-lbs is stacked from top to bottom with contenders trying hard to get a title shot. However, all this doesn’t surprise Topuria, who in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, dismissed all of them.
Yeah, for sure. That could happen. If you have a champion like Belal or many names I could bring right now, that’s an easy path. Like, you can go slap him and get the title. That’s it.

It would be interesting to see whether Topuria does what he says in the future. Given his personality, it won’t be surprising to see him moving up next year. However, for now, he has to deal with fan favorite Charles Oliveira this weekend at the T-Mobile Arena.
