Fans are convinced that the return of Toni Kroos to the squad, paired with the composure and quality of Gundogan in midfield will hand the Germans the title in their home ground.
After booking their spot in the next round, Germany’s final group-stage game will be against Switzerland.
Germany cruise past Hungary to become first team to secure Round of 16 berth
After an impressive opening game against Scotland, Euro 2024 hosts Germany did not disappoint as they became the first side in the competition to book their spot for the next round. They did so with a 2-0 win over Hungary in a largely one-sided encounter in Group A. Germany owe the win to captain Ilkay Gundogan, who scored the second while also assisting the opening goal.

After a nervy opening to the game, Gundogan found himself inside the box with an opportunity to gift Jamal Musiala an easy finish from close range. The captain worked hard to dispossess Hungary defender Willi Orban before assisting Musiala for the opener. The second goal however, was much more easier on the eye.
Maximilian Mittelstadt picked out the midfielder who was left unmarked in the middle of the penalty area. Gundogan did well to comfortably slot the ball into the bottom right corner with his left. Despite Germany’s dominance, Hungary were still presented with multiple opportunities to get on the scoresheet. Manuel Neuer also managed to keep a clean sheet on the day he equalled Gianluigi Buffon as the keeper with the most appearances at the Euros.
