Several Manchester City fans were disheartened to learn that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan agreed to sign for FC Barcelona back in June 2023. The German maestro has been crucial to Pep Guardiola‘s success and effortlessly fit into Xavi Hernandez‘s system at Barcelona last season.
Despite signing for the club on a two-year long deal, several reports suggest that the 33-year-old is looking for a way out. Gundogan has played 51 games in total for the Blaugrana since joining from Manchester City on a free transfer.
He also played a crucial part in Xavi’s midfield and has directly contributed to 19 goals during his time at the club. However, the economic situation at Barcelona, coupled with the arrival of Hansi Flick has made the player consider an early departure from the club.
It is understood that the player has struck up an agreement with the club to part ways and is waiting for a good offer. Gundogan’s departure will free up some much-needed space in the club’s wage bill and help accommodate potential new signings in the transfer window. The club are also tipped to sign either Nico Williams or Kingsley Coman.
Ilkay Gundogan considering Man City return as Barcelona look to offload three more players
Both FC Barcelona and Manchester City are on the lookout for new players in the transfer window. However, one particular midfielder will be welcomed with open hands at City after the club are left with no back-up for main man Rodri. Even though Ilkay Gundogan has agreed to pay ways with Barcelona, he will remain at the club unless a suitable offer presents itself.
With reports that Gundogan will also consider a return to his former club, fans are excited at the possibility of a sudden reunion. As for Barcelona, the club have less than two weeks to figure out the departures of Clement Lenglet, Mikayil Faye and Vitor Roque.
Out of the three, the departure of Roque seems imminent, given the fact that the player has also expressed his desire to leave permanently. Clubs like Sporting CP and Porto have come forward expressing their desire to sign the €30 million worth Brazilian.
Fans have contradicting takes to the club’s decision, as they pointed out how Roque joined the club with much anticipation and desire to succeed at Barca. The player signed for the Blaugrana in January 2024 and has only made 14 appearances since.
