Pakistani Prime Minister and former cricketing icon Imran Khan has tested positive for COVID-19, his office confirmed today. The news was given by Faisal Sultan, a special assistant to Imran Khan in matters of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination.

It is worth noting that the Prime Minister had received vaccination on the 18th of March. He had been given the first shot of Sinopharm which is a Chinese vaccine. Further, Pakistan had received 500,000 doses of the vaccine which were donated by China. The donation had been done on February 1 and the country had launched a vaccination drive soon after the arrival of the said doses.

Faisal Sultan, assistant to the PM, took to Twitter to announce the news saying, “PM Imran Khan has tested positive for Covid-19 and is self isolating at home.” Soon after the tweet was posted, a large section of people on Twitter expressed surprise as to how it could have happened when he had vaccination just two days ago. However, the fact of the matter is that it takes time for vaccination to act.

Having received Sinopharm for China, Pakistan is expected to get 2.8 million doses of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine from GAVI. They have also approved the Sputnik vaccine as well as the CanSino Biologics Inc Vaccine from Russia and China respectively.
