The emergence of t20 cricket has revolutionized the game of cricket. And in a similar fashion, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the catalyst behind the rapid growth of Indian cricket. From being an experiment back in 2008 to becoming the world’s biggest T20 franchise tournament. And feeding players into the national side, the league has come a long way in 13 years.
Over this time, the cash-rich league has seen numerous thrillers and six different champions. So far, Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the tournament with 5 winning titles to their name. Chennai Super Kings is the most consistent team, having qualified for the playoffs in all except one season they have participated in. Barring the arch-rivals, Kolkata Knight Riders have won the title twice. Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad have one title each to their name.

1. IPL 2008 – Rajasthan Royals

The inaugural season saw Rajasthan Royals lift the trophy after a dominating season. The Shane Warne-led team who won 11 of their 14 league games, beat Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets in the final. Yusuf Pathan played a blistering 56-run knock off 39 balls to win the man of the match award in the final.
2. IPL 2009 – Deccan Chargers
Following up a not-so-inspiring group stage, Deccan Chargers sprung a surprise in the final to lift their maiden IPL title. Royal Challengers Bangalore‘s star-studded line up bottled in the big game as they were defeated by 6 runs. Despite losing the game, Anil Kumble was adjudged the man of the match for his sensational spell of 4 for 16.
3. IPL 2010 – Chennai Super Kings
The second time proved to be the charm for Chennai Super Kings, who lifted their maiden trophy in their second final. Despite having a dismal group stage, CSK performed when it mattered the most. The MS Dhoni-led side flattened Mumbai Indians by 22 runs in the final.
4. IPL 2011 – Chennai Super Kings
By defending their title in 2011, CSK became the first team to win the IPL in back to back seasons. The 2011 season saw RCB losing the final of the tournament for the second time. CSK convincingly defeated RCB by 58 runs in the final to clincg their second title.
5. IPL 2012 – Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders converted a great group stage performance to a title winning campaign under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. KKR defeated CSK, who were playing their third consecutive final, comprehensively. Riding on a sensational 89-run knock off 48 balls by Maninder Bisla, KKR chased down the 191-run target in 19.4 overs.
6. IPL 2013 – Mumbai Indians
After 5 long seasons, a change of captain saw Mumbai Indians lifting their maiden trophy. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, MI defeated CSK to take sweet revenge of 2010 final. In pursuit of a 148-run total, CSK could only muster 125 runs in 20 overs. MI won the final by 23 runs.
7. IPL 2014 – Kolkata Knight Riders
Kings XI Punjab faltered in their maiden IPL final handing KKR their second title. KKR won the game by 3 wickets. The game’s highlight was Manish Pandey’s stellar knock of 90 runs off just 50 balls.
8. IPL 2015 – Mumbai Indians
Once again, it was archrivals MI and CSK in the final. And once again Mi got the better of CSK on the big stage. Chasing 202, CSK could score 161 in the second innings. Mumbai Indians clinched the second IPL title.
9. IPL 2016 – Sunrisers Hyderabad
RCB’s search for an IPL trophy finished with yet another defeat in the final. And it was the Sunrisers Hyderabad who got the better of them this time. SRH lifted their maiden IPL title on the back of captain David Warner‘s glorious run. RCB fall short of just 8 runs as SRH clinched their maiden IPL title.
10. IPL 2017 – Mumbai Indians
The final of IPL 2017 saw a gripping low scoring affair between MI and Rising Pune Supergiants. Aussie Mitchel Johnson starred with three wickets as MI clinched the title by just 1 run. Krunal Pandya won the Man of the Match for his fighting knock of 47 runs off 38 balls.
11. IPL 2018 – Chennai Super Kings
Returning from a two-year ban, CSK announced their arrival in style. With a team of veterans, MS Dhoni lifted his and CSK’s third title riding on the back of a scintillating century from Shane Watson in the final. He was awarded Man of the Match for his match-winning knock of 117 runs off just 57 balls.
12. IPL 2019 – Mumbai Indians
For the third time in a row, MI beat CSK in an IPL final. The match was a thriller as it went down right to the final ball. It was MI who had the last laugh as they won the game by1 run to win their fourth title.
13. IPL 2020 – Mumbai Indians
MI went on to script history yet again as they lifted a record fifth IPL title. Playing thier maiden IPL final, Delhi Capitals faltered on the big stage. After a disastrous start, they were able to muster 156 runs. But it wasn’t enough as MI chased it down 8 balls to spare. Mumbai are the second team after CSK to successfully defend the title.
