India were in a comfortable position with 188 runs on board on the first day of the Adelaide Test. Captain Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane stitched a crucial 88 run stand. But a mix up saw Kohli get run out and India’s steady innings crumbled away thereafter. After a rocky start, Kohli steadied the ship with Cheteshwar Pujara before Rahane joined him in the middle.

Following the run-out, Australia clawed their way in as they took wickets at regular intervals. The visitors finished day one at 233 at the loss of seven wickets. But were able to add only 11 more runs as they were bowled out in under four overs into the second day. Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon hailed Kohli’s wicket as ‘massive’ for the Indian skipper was looking really good. Kohli was dismissed at 74 after a steady and composed innings.

“It was massive. A wicket like that, run out, specially of Virat is massive. It was good to be back on board after the Ashes. He was batting pretty well, so happy with that,” Lyon said at the virtual press conference after the day’s play.

Always up for the challenge against the best batsmen

Over the years, Lyon has established himself as one of the hosts’ lead wicket-taker. The clever off-spinner locked horns with Kohli and Pujara on the first day. And the battle that ensued was enthralling. One of the greatest spinners of the generation faced two of the best players spin. Lyon hailed the face-off as ‘a great challenge’ and adds that he always looks forward to these big moments in the game. It was Lyon who had the last laugh in the battle as he dismissed him for the 10th time in Test cricket.

It was good fun, good conversations there but the battle there is against the best players of the world. On a day-one wicket, it was a great challenge. They (Kohli and Pujara) are different in style and approach, batting against spin bowling. I am always up for the challenge against the best batsmen,” he said.

The 33-year-old adds that the team is ‘satisfied’ with how the match has turned out so far. But admits that the bowling unit can do better and they will be pushing themselves for it as the match progresses.

Definitely satisfying, but we can get a lot better. We are very happy with where we are at but can keep pushing the boundaries and keep getting better as a bowling unit. We are happy, but still have a lot of work to do,” Lyon said.
