India vs Australia: Allan Border calls for Shaun Marsh to return as “stop-gap” opener
Allan Border and Shaun Marsh
Going into the Border Gavaskar series, Australia are in big trouble as injuries continue to haunt them. David Warner‘s groin strain and Will Pucovski‘s concussion has left the Aussies with an opening conundrum. With Joe Burns‘ string of low scores continuing, the think tank has their work cut out ahead of the Test series. The Aussies have some promising candidates in Marcus Harris, Nic Maddison and veteran Matthew Wade to fill the void.
He gives the experience we need at the top
Meanwhile, former Australia skipper Allan Border has come up with an interesting proposition. Border backs Shaun Marsh to come in as a “stop-gap” opener. He suggested moving in form Marnus Labuschagne to the top. And even went on to back Harris, who has been in fine form for Victoria. Yet he stressed on bringing Marsh given his impressive run in the Sheffield Shield.
“You could move Marnus Labuschagne up to the top of the order. He’s shown that he can handle the new ball; batting at number three you have to do a bit of that at times. Marcus Harris has been in some good touch; he could be one of those young bolters that could come in and do the job for you,” Border told The West Australia.
“And right out of the left field, I think maybe even Shaun Marsh could be one of those stop-gap guys given the experience we need at the top of the order,” he added.
The 37-year-old has scored three centuries and an impressive 88 in his last six innings for West Australia since October. Marsh can come in handy with his slow left arm in assisting Nathan Lyon. However, the call might come down to the performance in Australia A’s final tour game against India A. The pink ball tour game is currently underway at the SCG.
