India, still healing from the wounds of the humiliating defeat in the first Test will look to bounce back strongly in the second Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India will be without the services of their captain Virat Kohli who has left for India on paternity leave and bowler Mohammed Shami who fractured his arm during the first Test.

India announced the playing XI for the Boxing Day Test and apart from the aforesaid two forced changes, two other changes have been made. Shubman Gill has come in for the under-fire Prithvi Shaw while Rishabh Pant has replaced Wriddhiman Saha. Instead of Kohli and Shami, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj have come in. This means the only three players in the squad who haven’t got to play a match yet are Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav and KL Rahul.

Former Indian captain and chairman of selectors, Kris Srikkanth took to Twitter today following the announcement of the playing XI for the second Test at the MCG and questioned the exclusion of KL Rahul from the XI. He said, “Don’t get why @klrahul11 is dropped for the boxing test!”

KL Rahul hasn’t played a Test match in over a year. Despite being a part of the Test squad regularly, his poor returns meant he wasn’t preferred over the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal. However, thanks to his excellent performances in limited-overs cricket, the wicket-keeper batsman had made a case for himself to be included in the Test team as well. The same hasn’t come to fruition as of yet but Rahul will be ready and raring to go when the opportunity comes.
