India put on a horrific batting display against Australia on Day 3 of the first Test at the Adelaide Oval to get bowled out for a paltry 36 – their lowest ever total in Test cricket history. Despite the fact that they began the match ahead by 62 runs, India were dealt a harsh reality check on a pitch where the Aussie pacers made merry. None of the Indian batsmen could reach double figures as India endured a day to forget.

For the Aussies, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were excellent with their accurate and tight bowling to get the Indian batsmen to nick one delivery after another. Hazlewood took a fifer while the latter got four wickets as Mohammad Shami‘s retired hurt wicket ended a truly dismal day for India.

36 is India’s lowest score in Test match history, the previous lowest being 42 against England in 1974. The lowest ever by any team is 26 by New Zealand in 1955 again against England. Only New Zealand and South Africa have registered a score of less than 36 in a Test match innings.

‘Mighty India come crumbling down’ – Shoaib Akhtar

Former Pakistani fast-bowler Shoaib Akhtar spoke to India Today after India’s horrific batting display and slammed them for the same saying, “I woke up and the morning and switched on the TV. Could not see the match yesterday night. I saw India had put 369 on the board. Then I rubbed my eyes and saw carefully, I saw it’s 36 and there is slash before 9 and one is retired hurt. Embarrassing loss. Embarrassing batting, world’s mighty batting crumbling down.”

He then went on to express happiness that Pakistan’s lowest score of 49 was not eclipsed by the Indian batters today saying, “They broke our record also. 36 all out! This is disgraceful performance, it’s terrible. But happiest that they broke our (Pakistan’s) record. Anyways, this happens in cricket. Bare it and bare the criticism, this is going to happen to you now. So, mighty India come crumbling down. This is bad news.”

India will look to bounce back from the horror-show with a stronger performance in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day – December 26.
