Australia got off to a flying start in their ODI series against India with a comprehensive 66-run win at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Australia raced away to a huge score of 374 thanks to centuries from Aaron Finch and Steve Smith along with a late blitz by Glenn Maxwell.

In the chase, India were stifled and rocked back early on thanks to a triple strike by Josh Hazlewood. Despite some resistance from Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya, Australia managed to win the match courtesy an excellent spell by leggie Adam Zampa who returned four wickets including the crucial two of Dhawan and Pandya.

While the quality of batting was excellent, the same couldn’t be said of the fielding as both sides dropped a generous amount of catches. Another issue which was raised was the slow over-rate that was maintained by India. The same was noticed by the match officials and the Indian players were fined 20% of their match fee.

Addressing the media after the match, Adam Zampa addressed the issue of the slow over-rates. “I don’t know what the ruling should be, or if there should be punishment, but something definitely has to be done about it,” Zampa said. “From a viewers’ point of view it’s probably not the best look for the game.”

“I wouldn’t want to make excuses but it’s really hard to imitate the pressure of one-day cricket and the best way to do it was when you are together as a squad and you do fielding sessions and the intensity of the training is at that international standard,” Zampa added.

Man of the Match Steve Smith had also spoken out on the issue of slow over-rates. He said, “It (the match) felt like it went all day. The longest 50 overs in the field I’ve ever had, that’s for sure.”
