India vs Australia: “I am not Dhoni” – Matthew Wade quips after missed stumping chance

India clinched victory in the 2nd T20I against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in a high-scoring thriller. In a match that saw the bowlers suffer on a flat wicket, it was India who held their nerve to notch up a series-winning victory. The match saw Australia playing without their captain Aaron Finch who was replaced by stand-in captain Matthew Wade.
Captaincy seemed to make Wade come alive as the left-hander took the initiative to open the innings. He was arguably Australia’s best performer on the day as his half-century came at a strike-rate in excess of 200. He was however, unfortunate to be run-out after fortune favored him with a dropped chance courtesy Virat Kohli. In the end, Wade’s innings did not prove to be enough for Australia, as Hardik Pandya’s power-hitting took India home.
‘Not Dhoni’ trends on social media after Wade’s remark
In the 9th over bowled by leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson, an interesting remark was caught on the stump mic. This came about after a wide delivery from the leggie that saw a stumping chance to dismiss Shikhar Dhawan for stand-in captain and wicket-keeper Matthew Wade. Dhawan’s feet were in the air for some time but he brought it down in time to ensure he wasn’t dismissed. The same was taken to the third-umpire who confirmed that it was not out.
Following the missed opportunity to stump Dhawan, Wade quipped, “Not Dhoni. Not quick enough like Dhoni.” referring to former Indian captain MS Dhoni’s fast hands behind the stumps to which Dhawan nodded and said, “Yeah” with a smile. This conversation was caught on the stump mic and is going viral on social media with fans of MS Dhoni trending the hashtag #NotDhoni.
