India vs Australia: ‘I don’t know how to describe this’ – Ajinkya Rahane reacts to historic run chase in Brisbane

After a tough couple of weeks Down Under, India came in with all guns, young guns to be exact, blazing at the Gabba. And it did the trick for them as the tourists lifted the Border Gavaskar Trophy Down Under for the second time in two tours. Thanks to Shubhman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant‘s gutsy efforts, India completed a record chase at Gabba. And snapped Australia’s 32 year-long undefeated streak at the venue.
Stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane was left speechless following the side’s impressive performance. Rahane shared that the team showed the intent of winning the game from the get-go. And it paid off as India chased down 328 with three overs and as many wickets in hand. Rahane was quick to hail Pujara’s valiant effort on the fifth day. The India number three coped well over 10 body blows during his defiant knock of 56 to set up the victory.
“It means a lot to us. I don’t know how to describe this, but our boys showed a lot of character and determination after the Adelaide Test. I’m really proud of each individual. The conversation between Pujara and me was that he would bat normal, and I would take it on. It was all about intent. Credit to Pujara, the way he handled the pressure was magnificent. Rishabh and Washington were very good at the end,” Rahane said after the game.
Incredible character shown by the bowlers and everyone

The highlight of the game was the grit shown by India’s young brigade. Let it be Mohammed Siraj‘s maiden fifer in the second innings or Gills impressive 91 on the fifth day. Or Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar‘s all-round performance, the rookies did a fabulous job against the full strength Australia sie. And Rahane hailed them for the historic win at the Gabba.
“Taking 20 wickets was the key, so we opted for 5 bowlers. Sundar brought the balance in place of Jadeja. The intention was clear to play five bowlers. Siraj played two Tests, Saini just one, so it was inexperienced but the character shown by the bowlers and everyone else was incredible. We didn’t discuss anything about Adelaide. Just played wanted to play the remaining games with good attitude and character without worrying about the result,” he concludes.
Above all, the win propelled India to the top of the World Test Championship table while Australia slipped down to three. Next up, India plays England at home which will be their final series of the Test Championship. If they manage to win the series at home 2-0, they will seal their place at Lords for the WTC final.
