As the ODI series between India and Australia has come to an end with the latter clinching a 2-1 win, a big topic of discussion has arisen especially after Glenn Maxwell’s excellent form and hitting in the series. Maxwell, who failed to hit a single six in the Indian Premier League (IPL) came into his own in the ODI series in Australia hitting two half-centuries and a 45 in an exhibition of power-hitting.

The highlights of all three of his innings were the switch-hits and reverse-sweeps that the all-rounder employed to put off the bowlers and pierce the gaps. He struck nonchalant switch-hits not only off spinners but also off pace bowlers. This has once again led to plenty of debate among pundits and analysts as to whether the shot should be deemed illegal since it foils bowlers’ plans and also their chances of picking up an LBW wicket.

‘It’s worth a discussion’ – Shane Warne

Recently, former Australian captain Ian Chappell had slammed the switch-hit and termed it ‘annoying and unfair’. He even went to incredible lengths to ask the International Cricket Council (ICC) to ban the shot.

Now, former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has concurred with Chappell and stated that the topic is worth discussing and mulling over. “As a bowler, we have to nominate what hand we’re bowling with, and what side of the wicket we’re bowling with,” Fox Sports quoted Warne as saying on Wednesday.

“I’m setting a field to a right-hand batsman, so now when they switch-hit, I’m actually bowling to a left-hand batsman. I’m not sure I like it. It’s worth a discussion, worth a debate to work out what’s the right thing. Maybe the bowler can run up behind the umpire and bowl over or around,” he added.
