India made history with an unprecedented victory against Australia at the Gabba that helped them clinch the four-match series by a 2-1 scoreline. Nobody gave the inexperienced side a chance especially after the debacle in Adelaide and the plethora of injuries that the team suffered. However, the team showed character, grit and determination to seal a series win that will be remembered for long.

The heroes on Day 5 of the Gabba Test were half-centurions Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant. The trio played vastly different kinds of innings but their contributions were invaluable. From a position of great peril, a series win ensued. In the process, numerous records were broken by the Indian side.

Australia had never lost at the Gabba in 32 years with their last defeat coming against West Indies in 1988. Since then, they had played 31 Tests and won 24. It was India who broke the streak today. In the process, they also became the first Asian team to win at the Gabba.

The target of 328 chased down by India was the third-highest run-chase in their history. They had previously chased down 387 against England in Chennai in 2007-08 and 403 against West Indies in Port of Spain in 1975-76. Similarly, the 325 runs scored on Day 5 by India was the third-highest ever on Day 5 in a winning cause after Australia (404) in 1948 and West Indies (344) in 1984.

The ever so solid Cheteshwar Pujara also made history by becoming the first Indian batter to survive for more than 200 balls against Australia in an innings six times. Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar are second with five.

Rishabh Pant notched up the third-highest score by an Indian wicket-keeper in the fourth innings of a Test. The first two are also Pant himself (114 against England at the Oval in 2018 and 97 against Australia in Sydney in the third Test).
