Hardik Pandya made an impressive comeback in the international arena after a long layoff due to a back injury. Batting at number six, Pandya emerged as the leading run-scorer for team India during the One Day International (ODI) series against Australia. The 27-year old slammed 210 runs in three innings with two 90+ scores

Former Indian cricketer turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar praised Hardik Pandya as a ‘pure number six batsman for India in limited-overs matches. However, he admitted that earlier he was a bit doubtful of Hardik playing at number six in 50-over games.

“I was sceptical when they picked him on IPL performance. I thought he was a good T20 batsman but 50 over – is a slightly different game. Can Hardik Pandya be a pure 50 overs batsman and he proved to all of us that he can,” Manjrekar said on Sony Six after India’s win in the 3rd ODI.

“He had that score in the first match but we have seen him get runs and not be consistent enough but we have seen in this game again today. So yes, India has found a pure number six Who knows he might start going up the order?”

‘Irrespective of Pandya’s bowling, India has found a capable batsman’

Hardik Pandya averaged 105 in the ODI series

Sanjay Manjerkar earlier picked Manish Pandey over Hardik Pandya to bat at number six in the ODIs. However, Hardik’s maturity and shot selection in this series forced him to change his mind.

“It wasn’t a T20 innings, India lost early wickets, and he got 30 from his first 30 balls. He has got the range and not too many bowlers can keep him quiet. That’s really impressive. He has convinced me as I was sceptical about him as a number 6 pure batsman. I think India has found one,” said Manjrekar.

“Whether he bowls or not, India has now found a very capable batsman who can be used as an option in No. 5 or No. 6.”
