India vs Australia: India name Rohit Sharma as vice-captain for final two Tests
Rohit Sharma
Indian batting ace Rohit Sharma has been announced as the vice-captain for the last two tests in the series against Australia as well. The 33-year-old who is India’s limited-overs vice captain missed the white ball leg of the tour as well as the first two Tests due to fitness issues and a mandatory quarantine period. He joined with the squad on Wednesday where he was warmly welcomed by his teammates.
This is the first time Rohit Sharma will be the vice-captain for the Indian Test side. The usual vice-captain is Ajinkya Rahane who is currently captaining the side due to Virat Kohli‘s absence on paternity leave. For the second Test, it was Cheteshwar Pujara who was the vice-captain as both Kohli and Rohit were absent from the playing XI.
Rohit announced as vice-captain
According to India Today, Rohit Sharma has now straightaway been appointed as the vice-captain for India. While it looked a bit unclear as to whether the batsman would find a place in the XI, it now seems all but certain. It however remains to be seen who Rohit would replace in the XI.
Currently, the places of Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari lie in doubt because of their poor form in the first two Tests. If the former is replaced, Rohit Sharma would slot straight in as an opener. However, if it is the latter who is replaced, Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill will have to slot in at No. 5 instead of their preferred opening position.
The third Test between India and Australia begins on the 7th of January at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
