Stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane played a gritty knock at the MCG as he led the side with example in the Boing Day Test. Rahane smashed a 223 ball 112 as India went on to build a healthy lead of 131. Having lost some quick wickets, the Mumbai batter stitched crucial partnerships as he saw the side through the rough waters. Rahane was extremely cautious at the start but after Tea on Day 2, he got into his groove and started scoring runs freely.

The middle-order batsman saw off some lethal spells of fast bowling as he went about his innings. While many experts hailed the innings his best ever, Rahane differed. The stand-in captain feels that his ton at Lords tops the list of his special innings. The ton against England came in similar conditions and was the second century of Rahane’s Test career.

It was really special. Getting a century always is. Still feel that my hundred against England at Lord’s is my best,” Rahane said after the match.

India are in a commanding position in the Test having reduced Australia to 133 for 6 on day three. The visitors’ bowling attack is proving too hot to handle for the Aussies. But Rahane feels that the match is still very much alive. The Aussie tailenders do possess some threat with the bat. And given India’s inability to finish off the tail early, it might prove to be decisive in the game.

“This game is not over yet, we still have to get four more wickets,” Rahane told broadcasters Sony Network at the end of day’s play. “Credit to the bowlers, they bowled in the right areas.”

Although all is good for Rahane’s men so far, the visitors might get hit by yet another injury this series. Umesh Yadav limped off the field in his fourth over today following pain in his calf muscle. The team management has confirmed that the speedster will undergo scans, the signs are ominous for India. The tourists have already lost pacer Mohammed Shami to injury in the first Test. And with nearly no back up quick in the side except Navdeep Saini, India might suffer a big blow if Umesh is ruled out for even a game now.
