Ravichandran Ashwin has been at his wily best for India in the Test series against Australia so far. His consistent performances over the course of the two matches have helped his side a great deal in bowling out the opposition. His battles with Steve Smith have especially been instrumental in the Indian bowlers’ success so far. The off-spinner has dismissed Smith cheaply twice so far in the series.

In the second Test, Ashwin ended with five wickets including the key dismissals of Smith in the first innings and the well-set Marnus Labuschagne in the second. The spinner will now look to continue in the same vein in the third and fourth Tests in order to seal a famous second consecutive series win in Australia.

VVS Laxman wrote in a column for The Times of India and praised Ashwin saying, “Ravichandran Ashwin seems to have the measure of Smith at the moment and backed up his performance in Adelaide with another lovely display of off-spin in Melbourne. It’s the best I have seen Ashwin bowl overseas, and that’s saying something given the peaks he has scaled.”

Laxman also lauded debutants Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj for their impressive displays in the second Test. “I was heartened by the approach as well as the performances of debutants Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj. It also reiterates India’s burgeoning bench strength; even without their best batsman and their most experienced pacer on tour, Mohammed Shami, not to mention the absence of Ishant and Rohit Sharma, India didn’t appear seriously handicapped,” Laxman wrote.

The third Test between India and Australia is scheduled to be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 7.
