India put the humiliating defeat they suffered in Adelaide behind them by defeating Australia in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to level the four-match Test series in clinical fashion. The visitors’ bowling attack was terrific and relentless while skipper Ajinkya Rahane led from the front with his smart field placements and more importantly a commanding century in the first innings.

Another positive was the sparkling knocks of debutant Shubman Gill. Replacing the out-of-form Prithvi Shaw, the 21-year-old showed no signs of nerves as he stroked his way to a confident 45 in the first innings despite losing his partner Mayank Agarwal for a duck. In the second innings as well, he played classy strokes to help his side chase down a total of 70 by remaining unbeaten on 35.

‘He’s the first Shubman Gill’ – Wasim Jaffer

Following Shubman Gill’s contributions in India’s victory, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer who is known to be quite active on social media, took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the debutant and to also urge fans to not put ‘undue pressure’ on him.

He wrote, “Shubman is special but please let him enjoy his cricket and grow into his career. Don’t compare him to anyone and put undue pressure on him. He’s not next somebody he’s first Shubman Gill. We’ve lost many great talents due to undue pressure and unreal expectations (sic).”

Having impressed cricketers, fans and pundits around the world, all eyes will now be on Shubman Gill now to see if he can make a name for himself as a mainstay in the Indian Test line-up.
