India defied all odds to defeat Australia in the fourth and final Test at the Gabba to take the four-match series, 2-1. Battling through injuries, the loss of their captain Virat Kohli and the shocker at the Adelaide Oval, India showed incredible determination and character to bounce back from adversity and clinch a famous victory that will be etched in history as one of the greatest ever in history.

On the final day, it was three half-centurions who led the way with their lion-hearted efforts – Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant. There was jubilation in the Indian dressing room after the historic win but the Australians were crestfallen. Their head coach Justin Langer however, gave full credit to the Indians and stayed positive after the match as he fielded questions from commentator and his former opening partner Matthew Hayden.

‘You cannot take anything for granted’ – Justin Langer

Speaking to 7Cricket commentator Hayden, Justin Langer was all praise for India as he said, “India deserves full credit, they have been outstanding. We will learn a lot of lessons from this. You cannot take anything for granted, never ever underestimate the Indians, 1.5 billion (people in India) and you play in the senior team, you have to be really tough. I couldn’t appreciate India enough.”

“It was an incredible Test series, there is a winner and there is a loser. Test cricket is the winner, it is going to hurt us big time. It is an amazing effort, Pant’s innings reminded me of Ben Stokes at Headingley actually. He came in, he was fearless and he will be lauded for that. Young Shubman Gill also batted well, their young bowling attack kept us under pressure in the whole game. India deserves full credit,” he added.

India’s attention will now shift to the home series against England while Australia will await a decision on whether their series against South Africa will be greenlit.
