India’s limited-overs vice-captain who has also made a name for himself recently as a reliable red-ball cricketer, Rohit Sharma is set to fly from Sydney on Wednesday to join his Indian teammates in Melbourne where the third match of the series will be held. It is noteworthy that Melbourne is where the second Test is currently in progress as well. The third Test was scheduled to be held in Sydney but due to the rising COVID-19 cases there, it seems likely that Melbourne will be the host again.

Sources according to ANI stated that Rohit Sharma will be flown to Melbourne and will enter India’s bio-bubble on Wednesday because of the COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney where he is, at present. “Yes, he will be flown to Melbourne by CA on Wednesday as the third game is almost set to take place at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) with an eye on the coronavirus outbreak,” the source reportedly said.

Contingency plan of third Test at MCG to be put into action

Earlier, it was announced that the Melbourne Cricket Ground would be the backup option in case it becomes impossible to host the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It now seems likely, according to ANI, that the contingency plan will be put into action. The CEO of Cricket Australia had earlier said, “Should the public health situation in NSW render playing in Sydney untenable, CA’s preferred contingency plan is to work with the Victorian Government to play the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground followed by the fourth Test at the Gabba.”

He had further said, “We have always maintained that scheduling a full summer of cricket during a global pandemic would require agility, problem-solving and teamwork like never before. We continue to place the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved as our number one priority. The record testing numbers and the drop in new community transmissions in NSW have provided cause for optimism, however, if the situation in Sydney deteriorates, we have strong contingency plans in place.”

If the contingency plan is thus put into action which it probably will, the MCG will host the third Test and the Gabba will host the fourth.
