The limited-overs leg of India’s tour of Australia concluded yesterday with the 3rd T20I. While the overall quality of batting and to an extend bowling were top-notch for both teams, the same can’t be said of fielding. Both teams were guilty of dropping a plethora of catches and making fumbles and misfields.

The Men in Blue were the guiltier of the two teams as catch after catch went down over the course of the 6 matches that were played. Normally assured fielders like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Manish Pandey put down sitters as well. The same has not gone down well with the India faithful or with cricketers and experts. India would want the standard of fielding to improve in the Test series which will follow and the other series and tournaments to come.

‘India can’t win the World Cup with fielding like this’

Mohammad Kaif

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif who was known to be one of the greatest fielders India has ever produced spoke on India’s sloppiness on the field. “So many dropped catches and misfields cannot be part of the game. They are doing it too much. If India has to win the World Cup, which is going to happen in October in India, then if the fielding is like this, then you will lose the big matches,” Kaif said on Sony’s post-match show.

“This Indian team has young bowlers, so when the catch is dropped the poor guys go back to the run-up. The bowler does not say anything but thinks it is part of the game. But it is not,” Kaif said. “If we had dropped a catch of Ajit Agarkar, Srinath, or Zaheer Khan’s bowling, then even if they stare at the fielder, then you need to practice for extra two hours the next day,” he further said.

India will hope their standard of fielding improves in the first Test which is scheduled to begin on the 17th of December at the Adelaide Oval.
