India vs Australia: “Steve Smith will do a great job if given an opportunity to captain Australia,” says Matthew Wade

Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade who stood in as captain for the injured Aaron Finch in the second T20I against India has stated that if former captain Steve Smith is given an opportunity to lead the Aussies again, he would do a great job. Smith was the captain of Australia before he was banned for a year from cricket and another year from captaincy after his role in the ball-tampering saga in South Africa.
After Smith’s ban, Tim Paine took over Test captaincy while Aaron Finch took over in limited overs cricket. After the ban overturns, there is a question that Cricket Australia faces as to whether they should revert Smith back as captain or let Paine and Finch continue. Stand-in skipper Wade gave his thoughts on the same and chose to be diplomatic in his answers.
‘Australia has so many great leaders’ – Matthew Wade

Matthew Wade addressed a virtual press conference after the second T20I in which he was asked as to the debacle surrounding Australia’s captaincy to which the left-handed batsman said, “We have so many good leaders, I have been given the captaincy but we have got Smith, we have got Moises (Henriques), who captains his BBL team. We have guys with a lot of experience, there is a lot of discussions among the seniors but we are all working together.”
“It is not me driving the field, obviously Finchy (Aaron Finch) is our captain and we all work together when he plays well. So Smith has plenty of say, he has been a great captain for a long time and he will do a great job if he gets an opportunity,” Wade further stated.
Australia face India in the 3rd and inconsequential T20I tomorrow at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
