India’s series win over Australia that included the breaching of the famed Gabba fortress was celebrated worldwide as one of the most unprecedented and greatest series wins in history. The Indians’ backs were against the wall after collapsing to a 36 all-out in the first Test and losing their captain Virat Kohli on paternity leave. Soon, the injuries started piling up and by the end of the tour, India had to play with their net bowlers.

Despite all setbacks and challenges, India showed that they were up for it through tremendous grit and determination. A win fashioned by stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane‘s century followed before a rearguard of all rearguards helped them escape with a draw. Then, the breaching of the Gabbatoir followed. A stunning fourth innings chase fashioned by scintillating knocks from Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant led India to glory.

Sunil Gavaskar spoke to The Times of India upon his return to India from Australia where he was a part of the commentary team about how former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara who was also a part of the team, reacted upon India’s win at the Gabba.

“At the Channel 7 farewell party on the last day, I walked around the room with my glass raised, and every Australian there cheered. Then Brian Charles Lara who was a fellow commentator during the series came, hugged me, and screamed, ‘We won, we won’. What a series!” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar then recalled a few more words that the West Indian said. “Will Cherish these memories for whatever is left of my life. I am still over the moon and still in orbit,” he revealed Lara as having said.
