India vs England 2021: Final three T20Is to be played behind closed doors

The ongoing T20I series between India and England which had seen large crowds in attendance despite only 50% being allowed due to the large capacity of the Narendra Modi Stadium will now be played behind closed doors with no crowds allowed due to the rising COVID-19 cases in the state as well as the rest of the country. The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) announced it in a statement.

The T20I series is currently level at 1-1. England won the first match comfortably thanks to an inspired bowling performance by Jofra Archer and the rest of the pacer that helped restrict India to a low score of 124 which was chased down with ease. In the second match, India came roaring back thanks to half-centuries from debutant Ishan Kishan and skipper Virat Kohli who helped chase down a target of 165.

The vice-president of the Gujarat Cricket Association, Dhanraj Nathwani took to Twitter to announce the news and release a statement. “Due to increasing number of Corona cases, Gujarat Cricket Association has decided to organize remaining T20 International Matches between India and England at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad behind closed doors,” the statement read.

“The GCA will refund the money to the spectators who have purchased the tickets for T20Is scheduled on March 16, March 18 and March 20, 2021,” it added. The BCCI also confirmed the news later by taking to Twitter to announce it.

It is noteworthy that the ODI series which follows the T20Is is also set to be held behind closed doors in Pune.

Fans express disappointment

Fans who had bought tickets for the three T20Is have expressed disappointment with not being allowed for the matches. A tweet posted by a fan has been going viral on social media where he has lamented the fact that he had bought tickets for both the third T20I in Ahmedabad as well as the fourth day of the third test in the same venue (which did not even go past the second day).
