India vs England 2021: “One good match doesn’t make you a good keeper” – Michael Vaughan says Rishabh Pant has to ‘get better’

Rishabh Pant‘s wicket-keeping has been a subject of scrutiny ever since his debut. Considered the long-term replacement for the legendary MS Dhoni, the youngster was always bound to be under pressure. But the expectations of the fans has always been sky-high meaning that even when he does well, his performances do tend to go under the radar. Ravichandran Ashwin addressed this issue at a press conference yesterday where he stated that youngsters like Pant should always be encouraged.

Pant was excellent behind the stumps during the second test against England that India won. He came under huge praise from skipper Virat Kohli as well as Ashwin for his terrific catches and stumpings on a turning track in Chepauk. Now, former England captain Michael Vaughan has stated that Pant still has a lot to improve with regard to his keeping and that one good performance won’t make him a good keeper.

‘He needs to continue to work’ – Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan spoke to Cricbuzz following the second test about Rishabh Pant’s keeping and said, “We know that he’s active because he’s always a little bit chirpy and that’s fine. But you’ve got to be able to catch the ball. His keeping in this game has been very, very good, and that for me has been a massive positive for the Indian team. He needs to continue to work and get better and catch the majority of the balls that come his way and do it with better technique.”

“I think he’s getting better all the time and he’s probably doing a lot of work on the training ground – he’s still got a long way to go to become a real, consistent keeper. One good Test match behind the stumps doesn’t make you a good wicketkeeper. He’s got to do it again,” Vaughan added.

The third test takes place in Ahmedabad and will begin on February 24.
