India vs England 2021: Rahul Chahar set to be added to T20I squad as Varun Chakravarthy’s replacement – Reports

Rahul Chahar

Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar is set to be added to India’s T20I squad for the 5-match series against England, according to reports from Cricbuzz. The reason for the same is that Varun Chakravarthy who was initially a part of the squad failed a fitness and hence, wasn’t allowed to join the squad in Ahmedabad. Rahul Tewatia had also failed the fitness test but the results of a retest have not yet been revealed.
Rahul Chahar has already played for India when he made his debut in 2019 against West Indies. Following a decent showing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the champions Mumbai Indians’ lead spinner, Chahar was picked as a standby player for the test series against England. He was hence, a part of the squad and after the rest of the 4 players were released for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Chahar was asked to stay back.
BCCI asks selectors to send prospective international players for fitness tests

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now reportedly advised the panel of selectors to start identifying prospective international players in order to send them to fitness tests in advance. This has been done in order to prevent cases like that of Varun Chakravarthy arising. Only if players pass the advanced fitness test will they be considered for selection to the national team.
Varun Chakravarthy has meanwhile been asked to travel to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in order to work on his fitness. Tewatia on the other hand is with the Indian squad in Ahmedabad.
The first T20I between India and England begins on the 12th of March.
