Ravichandran Ashwin made history in the recently concluded third test against England when he became the second fastest bowler to reach the landmark of 400 test wickets. His 7 wickets in the match played a crucial role for his side as it, along with Axar Patel’s 11 wickets, helped bundle out England twice below 120 for two days in a row.

After the victory, there was a lot of noise, discussion and debates surrounding the pitch that was prepared for the third test. This was when Ashwin came up with a series of cryptic tweets talking about how ideas are being sold to people, stating that ‘as long as we are going to buy it, they will shove it down our throat’. His tweet was interpreted in various ways by the media and fans, but Ashwin has now come up with an explanation.

Ravichandran Ashwin addressed a virtual press conference today and was asked about the tweet. He explained it saying, “I am not disturbed with things being taken out of context. That is what has been happening for the last decade, if not more. That is why I put out the tweets I did yesterday. People need to get the context and what is happening. There have been people messaging me that the match has finished in two days. Every pink-ball game we have played has ended within three days. I do not know what to say, unfortunately, many people have not played the pink-ball game, so they will not understand this facet of the game.”

“My angst against the whole thing is that someone says one thing, there are so many people watching the same picture but are not able to paint a different one as compared to someone who is driving a certain case and selling a certain case to us. This needs to stop,” he added.

Asked as to whether his tweets were a reference to Yuvraj Singh‘s tweets on how the likes of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh could have taken more wickets if they had played on such wickets, Ashwin replied saying, “The reason behind my tweets was not regarding anyone in particular. When I read Yuvi paa’s tweet, I did not get affected, I did not find that tweet trying to tell us something. It just felt like a plain tweet. For me, the state of mind I am in right now, I did not find it wrong. I know Yuvi paa for a long time, I have the utmost respect for him. Some people amongst us tend to buy what people sell, I do not know the reason why certain people try to sell certain things, but it is clear it’s just a perception of what happens.”

Ashwin then spoke about the challenge of playing against the pink ball saying, “Honestly, if you give a little favoured stat towards the bowlers, this is what might happen. A little bit of advantage towards the bowlers, it starts to swing and seam more. The margin for errors for the batters is so little. These are things which we have noticed, this is the same thing that happened at Eden Gardens when we played against Bangladesh. This is the nature of the pink-ball Test, we got out for 36, England got out for 57 against New Zealand. If you look at the larger picture of Test cricket, you might say these are one-offs, but these are a regular thing in pink-ball Tests.”

He then stated that there were no issues however with the ball. “There is no apprehension about the pink-ball game for us, if there is apprehension then we can talk to the BCCI. I think it is a completely new thing that has been introduced, we are used to playing against the red ball, everyone is conditioned to play against the red ball, and now the pink ball has been brought in, it is about adapting and getting used to it. I do not think there is any issue about citing the pink ball,” Ashwin signed off.
