India vs England 2021: “India were better than us” – Sir Geoffrey Boycott defends Ahmedabad pitch
Ever since the third test between India and England in Ahmedabad concluded, there has been a lot of talk about the pitch that was prepared. The track which started turning right from the first ball and it greatly helped spinners of both teams to utilize it to a great extent and pick wickets with ease. England had gone with just one spinner in Jack Leach while India had 3. Further, the familiarity with conditions and the talent of the Indian spinners meant the English batters were no match.
Certain former cricketer and experts have criticized the pitch stating that it was not a 5-day test match wicket. However, some others have backed it saying that the home team has the advantage of preparing pitches to their advantage and that was exactly what India did. Further, it was the English batsmen who should have made advantage of the conditions after winning the toss and opting to bat first.
Geoffrey Boycott comes out in support of the pitch
Former English cricketing icon Sir Geoffrey Boycott was asked on Twitter as to his thoughts on the pitch for the third test. He responded saying, “There is nothing in the rules that says what type of pitch should be prepared. We had first choice of the surface and they were better than us. Simple.” He then went on to state in another reply that he himself would have struggled on the pitch as well but ‘not as bad as some of them’.
After the debacle in the first test in Chennai, India have opted for tracks that turn from day 1 onwards. Therefore, it would be no surprise if there is another similar surface greeting the Englishmen in the fourth and final test which begins on March 4 in the same venue.
