India vs England 2021: ‘The pitch had no such demons as we call, was a nice pitch to bat on,’ reckons Rohit Sharma after Team India’s thumping win
Team India’s senior opener Rohit Sharma was the only one who seemed to play the pink-ball with confidence and without any ugly shots. His body language seemed vociferous while the other batsmen looked struggling at the turf of the day-night Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Sharma, who scored a valorous 66-run knock in the first innings, was is a fiery form when Team India was to chase 49 runs to grab the win. In a post-match presentation that happened after the hosts win, Sharma mentioned that there were mistakes by batsmen from both sides.
‘We, as a batting unit, made lot of mistakes,’ said Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma bottled up the mouth of critiques who showed the pitch in a bad light.
“To be honest, on a pitch like that.. the pitch didn’t do anything. If I can recollect, most of the batsmen got out to straighter deliveries. Not just them, we, as a batting unit, made a lot of mistakes. We didn’t bat well in the first innings. The pitch had nothing as such, no such demons as we call. It was a nice pitch to bat on, once you’re in, you can score runs as well,” Rohit said during a virtual press conference.
With the unprecedented turning nature of the pitch, Sharma mentioned that one needs to be attacking on this pitch and not just be defensive.
“When you are playing on a pitch like that, you need to have an intent and look to score runs as well. You can’t just keep blocking. As you saw that odd ball might just turn and odd ball might just skid onto stumps, when you play for turn.
“You just need to be slightly ahead at times and try to find ways to score runs. My intent was not just to survive but try and score runs as well, while respecting the good balls. That’s all I tried to do.“
Rohit Sharma gave a classic performance in the second Test match in Chennai. During India’s first innings, he smashed 161 runs and was instrumental in getting Team India the victory against England.
With India winning the third Test in Ahmedabad, the Test series goes 2-1 in India’s favour. The win has kept India alive in the World Test Championship, while England is now out of contention.
