India vs England 2021: India end day 1 on top after bowling out England for 112 and reaching 99/3 at stumps
India ended the first day well and truly in the driver’s seat after a terrific bowling performance led by Axar Patel’s six-wicket-haul saw them bowl out England for just 112 in the first innings of the third test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. England had earlier won the toss and chosen to bat first while opting for a plethora of changes with the likes of James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley coming in. India had Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar coming in.
Ahead of the match, the stadium was christened after the current Prime Minister of India. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and President Ram Nath Kovind felicitated Ishant Sharma who was playing in his 100th test. The pacer became just the second in India’s history to achieve the feat after the legendary Kapil Dev.
Axar Patel spins a web around England; Rohit Sharma gets fifty
Batting first, England got off to a horror start as they lost Dom Sibley in just the third over before Axar Patel was brought into the attack. Even as Zak Crawley got to a fifty, the wickets kept falling. Axar removed Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes as well as Crawley while Ravichandran Ashwin accounted for Joe Root and Ollie Pope to leave England’s lower-order exposed.
The spin duo then went on to clean up the tail as well with Axar taking 6 and Ashwin scalping 3 as England were bowled out for 112. In reply, India saw out 5 overs in the twilight session before Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started to open up a bit. The latter was removed by Jofra Archer and Cheteshwar Pujara was cheaply dismissed by Jack Leach but Rohit kept going and got to a well-deserved fifty in the company of Virat Kohli before the Indian skipper was bowled in the last over of the day by Leach. India ended on 99/3.
