India vs England: ‘This template is ideal for Virat’ – Sanjay Bangar opines on Rohit-Kohli opening combination
Sanjay Bangar and Virat Kohli
Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli promoted himself during the fifth Twenty20 International (T20I) against England. This formula did wonders for the home side as they posted a massive total of 224-2 on the board at the end of their 20 overs. Both Rohit Sharma and Kohli played scintillating knocks of 64 and 80*. As a result, India won the match by 36 runs to clinch the series 3-2.
Many former cricketers and experts hailed the Indian captain for his decision of opening the innings. India’s ex-batting coach and current commentator Sanjay Bangar also joined this list to leap praises for the 32-year old. Bangar added that Rohit and Kohli are the two current best batsmen of this team and they need to play the maximum deliveries.

“He (Virat Kohli) thrives on timing the ball well, he thrives on finding those gaps. He was doing all those really well. In the long run, if he decides and if the team management decides that it’s going to be the way forward as to Virat Kohli and Rohit will open the innings, it means that two of their best batters are going to get a lot of balls to play,” Sanjay Bangar said on Star Sports.
‘Kohli takes off once he crosses 30-ball mark’: Bangar
Everyone is aware of the fact that Virat Kohli takes his time before shifting gears in the limited-overs formats. While mentioning this, Bangar said that opening the inning suits Kohli as he now gets more time to settle in the middle.
“And this template is actually ideal for somebody like Virat Kohli who literally takes off once he passes that 30-ball phase,” the 48-year-old former all-rounder added.
