The Indian men’s cricket team will begin the new year by facing off against New Zealand in a limited-overs series at home, participating in three ODIs and five T20Is. It will be the Blackcaps’ first visit to the country, more than a year after having whitewashed the Men in Blue in a Test series.

India’s white-ball series against the Kiwis also marks Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s return to the national team setup, after a month-long absence. The two former captains have also announced their retirements from two of the three international formats. They last played in the home ODI series against South Africa, in which Kohli finished as the highest run-getter with 302 runs at an unbelievable average of 151.

For the Men in Blue, it will also provide them with an opportunity to extend their winning run in ODIs at home, as well as to test their combinations before a six-month-long break from the format. The team’s form going into the marquee series against the Kiwis has been mixed, having lost the ODI series to Australia away from home, but managed to win the series against the Proteas at home by a 2-1 margin.

Coming to head-to-head records, India holds a competitive edge over New Zealand in the 50-over format. As of late 2025, the two sides have faced off 119 times, with the Men in Blue having won 61, and the Kiwis having won 50. The last time they faced each other was in the 2025 Champions Trophy final in Dubai, where India won by six wickets.

India vs. New Zealand ODI Series Schedule

The two teams will play three ODIs, which will be played over a span of a week. The 2026 New Zealand tour is particularly significant, given that Vadodara will be hosting an international match after 15 long years. Interestingly, the last match played in the city was in 2010, between India and New Zealand.

The two competing teams will remain in the state of Gujarat for the second ODI as well, which will be played at the Khanderi Cricket Stadium in Rajkot on January 14. The third and final ODI will be played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on January 18.

India vs. New Zealand ODI Squads

New Zealand announced a 15-member squad for the ODI series against India last week, with all-rounder Michael Bracewell being named skipper. Several senior players have been rested, including regular ODI captain Mitchell Santner, Kane Williamson, Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra, Tom Latham, Jacob Duffy, and Matt Henry. Many of them, however, find their place in the squad for the T20I series.

A host of emerging domestic player have been picked for the three ODIs, including all-rounders Josh Clarkson, Nick Kelly and Jayden Lennox. Wicket-keeper Mitchell Hay, pacers Kristian Clarke and Michael Rae, and spinner Adithya Ashok have also been included in the squad. On the other hand, the BCCI-appointed India men’s national team selectors are yet to announce the squad for the ODI series.
